What is the Orchid?
Dr. Faith Leibman, a U.S. Navy & Army Veteran wants to take the anxiety and embarrassment out of giving a urine sample.
For many patients, urinating into a specimen cup is a medical necessity to monitor health issues.
Thanks to the female anatomy, for women, it is often an undesirable task that ends in a wet mess and embarrassment. This is even more so for women with disabilities.
While working with disabled Veterans, Dr. Leibman frequently heard complaints about the discomfort associated with giving giving urine samples and the humiliation from potential accidents. Her solution? The Orchid! A patented, funnel shaped device created to mimic the shape of the female anatomy, making urine samples less stress and less mess!
The Problem
With nearly 41 million women in the United States having a disability and requiring frequent doctor appointments, it's time to present a better solution for urine sample collections. In order to have an efficient design that can aide in the prevention of splashbacks and messes, Dr.Leibman teamed up with Splash Lab at Utah State University. The researchers at the Splash Lab studied the physical mechanisms of fluid behaviors through a novel 3D volumetric measurement method known as Synthetic Aperture Imaging and imbedded instrumentation.

The Researches at The Splash Lab focused their study on the splash back issues and where the mess comes from when a woman gives a urine sample. They developed a model that includes a water reservoir with a tube attached to an anatomically correct, 3D printed female urethra, which impinges onto two artificial labia. The labia are made from a soft material known as Dragon Skin® and injected into a 3D mold of a typical female labia. It was assumed that the two labia are identical, of a uniform thickness with ellipsoidal curvature at the tips. Images were captured with a high-speed camera from both the ventral and median views using backlighting from a light bank.
Ventral and median views of a single labia and double labia were collected. The artificial labia were pushed further and further into the streams. These images show 300 averaged images for each scenario. In the lower left, a double labia is shown from a median view and the stream has turned into a sheet (dark grey below artificial labia), with small droplets streams on the left (light grey).
